The Illowa Irregulars and the Milan Rifle Club proudly present Fall Round-Up, our 3-day annual event, which is held the last weekend in September. Pre-registration is required for this shoot.
FRU, as we call it, has been the high point of our shooting season for over 20 years, and has grown into a well-attended event (averaging over 120 shooters) which, we believe, offers an enjoyable, fun time for all. We think we offer “a lot of bang for the buck” as our $70 entry fee includes:
- 10 stages (including one shotgun-only stage) of fast and fun shooting;
- A full day of “try as many times as you like” side matches (including some you won’t find anywhere else);
- Two catered lunches; and a,
- Friday night pizza party!
The only extra cost items are a warm-up match, optional Friday lunch, and the catered Saturday night banquet, which is held indoors on the club grounds.
The Milan Rifle Club grounds open for RV and tent campers on Thursday evening. We have a large, wide-open, relatively level grassed area available to us, and have been able to accommodate RV’s of all sizes, including motorhomes. Camping is of the “primitive” variety – generators are welcome, but we do request that campers respect their neighbors’ overnight quiet time. With the open area we have, quieter generators are usually not a problem. There is no charge for camping on the range.
The weekend begins on Friday morning, with registration opening at 8:30 AM. The first shooting event is a 4-Stage warm-up match in the town of Camden Mills. Shooters registered for this match proceed directly to the town to pick up their packets and prepare for the match, which begins at 9:00. Shortly after the conclusion of this match, side matches open at 11:00 AM and run until 4:00 PM. Shooters may try side matches as many times as they wish – or as their ammunition allows – with only the fastest time for each shooter being counted. We offer many of the usual side matches, but also offer a few unique venues as well. Typical matches include: Speed Pistol; Derringer; Pocket Pistol; Running Buffalo (speed rifle with a moving target); Shotgun Star (clay birds on a Texas Star type apparatus); the Revenges (two- shooter team engaging multiple aerial clay birds with shotguns); Long Range Rifle (285 yds.); 100 yd. Rifle; 50 yd. Pistol; and anything else the Side Match Director decides to offer.
At the conclusion of side matches, we invite shooters and families to join us at 5:00 for our campfire and pizza party. This event is held on the range and is included in the entry fee. A feature of this event is our famous dessert potluck. We invite and encourage everyone to whip up his/her favorite dessert and add it to the long table of tempting creations that always show up. This is a BYOB event.
Saturday begins at 8:00 AM, when registration opens on Walled Range #1, across the creek from the camping/side match area. We usually have gun cart transportation available for those who are camping and would otherwise have to walk over hill and dale. Parking is available outside the gates of Camden Mills for our day shooters. A mandatory shooters’ meeting begins at 8:30, after which we walk the short distance to Camden Mills, gear up, and begin shooting at approximately 9:10 AM. We shoot 5 stages, after which catered lunch is served under the big tent. Immediately after lunch, our intrepid match directors present side match awards, and then the remaining afternoon is free time. Our banquet is held Saturday evening, doors opening at 6:00 PM, in the indoor range just inside the main gate of the club. This is a BYOB event.
Sunday morning we gather in Camden Mills with our respective posses and gear up. Shooting starts at 9:00 AM sharp. As on Saturday, catered lunch is served under the big tent immediately after the final 5 stages are done. At the conclusion of lunch, match awards are presented, good-byes are said, and we head off our respective ways, vowing to return to Camden Mills the next year for another great Fall Round-Up!
If you’ve attended one of our Fall Round-Ups, please put us on your match schedule and, while you’re at it, round-up a posse of your friends and bring them with you. If you’ve never attended a Fall Round-Up at Camden Mills, please consider hitching up your team and heading this way.
