Celebrating Cowboy Action Shooting and Wishing You a Merry Christmas

Illowa Irregulars’ Cowboy Action Shooting Club wishes you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

2022 was quite a year for Illowa Irregulars and Camden Mills, our Cowboy town, beginning with our first match in April through our last match in November, plus we hosted the SASS 2022 Illinois State Championship for the first time, capping it all off with our annual Christmas Party held Saturday, December 3rd. As you can see in the image below, we had 30 cowboys, cowgirls, family and friends celebrating with us.

Thanks to everyone for being part of our llowa Irregulars family, friends, and acquaintances this past year. We are already making plans for 2023. Keep us in mind as you plan your shooting season. We’d love to have you join us!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years,

Your friends at Illowa Irregulars

PS. Illowa Irregulars are hosting the SASS 2023 Illinois State Championship on August 18-20, 2023. For more information about our club, the SASS 2023 Illinois State Championship, or other upcoming events go to www.illowairregulars.com.

Fall Round-Up 2022 Match Highlight Video

This is just a quick follow-up from Fall Round-Up.  Thanks to everyone who came to the Round-Up.

Click here or on the image below to view a short match highlight video and photos, with a little music thrown in here and there. There are only a few actual videos to share, along with a handful of photographs.  If you attended the match and don’t see yourself, you’ll certainly see photos/videos of others you know.  The Clean Shooter and Rank Order Results also scroll at the end.

Here is the time markers of the various sections, particularly useful for those that want to skip my intro.  😉

  • Video begins at the 8 minute mark
  • Photos begin at the 15 minute mark; and,
  • Scrolling results begin at the 19 minute mark.

Take care and hopefully you’ll continue to attend our matches in the future.  Look for information and registration forms on the Illinois State Championship to be coming soon.  We’re planning to offer another Saturday night Riverboat dinner cruise on the Mississippi River next year and have one or two other things planned that should make the 2023 State match a unique and fun experience you won’t want to miss

FRU 2022; Stage 4 – RT, You’re Going to Swing – Updated Version

How’s this for a twist – RT has changed his mind: He’s added a moving target to Stage 4 for your rifle. Have you ever shot moving and swinging targets using the same gun on a single stage? Here’s your chance! See Stage 4’s updated instructions below.

Swing: intransitive verb

  1. To move back and forth suspended or as if suspended from above.
  2. To move laterally or in a curve.
  3. To hit at something with a sweeping motion of the arm.

in this stage, RT gives you two of the three above definitions –

  1. the Cougar swings back and forth; and,
  2. the shooter moves laterally.

We’ll, let’s just forget about #3 – no hitting allowed!.

All kidding aside, the swinging Cougar is a fun stage, and you get plenty of chances to hit the 5 pistols targets on the dueling tree, so no worries there. Another way to think about this stage: All for fun; and fun for all!

FRU 2022 – An old-style, historical cowboy shoot; Stage 10 – Look what RT found in the back of our target storage

For this stage, RT found a cowboy target whose heads, arms, and feet each serves as a target when shooting your pistols. Now you understand the smile.

With the pistol, you’ll engage the head, arms, and feet. If you successfully hit (reset) them, you’ll earn a 5-second time reduction. Being the generous cowboy he his, RT will not count misses on this target as misses, so it’s not as devious a stage as you might think. You’ll have to read the stage instructions below for the details.

(Hint: If you shoot really light loads you may want to pack a few heavier loads for this one.)

Come on out for the last Fall Round-Up. Regardless of what you enjoy most about FRU: The fun side matches, the free Friday night pizza party, free Saturday lunch, the Saturday night banquet, or the free awards lunch and ceremony, the procedural and miss tickets, or if you just enjoy the late September 3-day match at Camden Mills, come on out and help us celebrate FRU in style.

FRU 2022 – An old-style, historical cowboy shoot; Stage 9 – The Medusa is back – long live the Medusa?

Medusa was one of three daughters of the sea gods Phorcys and Ceto. All of Medusa’s siblings were monsters but she had the misfortune of being turned into the most hideous of them all – the Medusa.

For those of you who’ve attended Fall Round-Up in recent years, you’ll recognize this hideous monster: Shoot the trigger plate and its snake-like arm flails about as it rotates from left to right to right to left, etc. Where to shoot to cut off its head is the hard part.

This year, RT decided to change it up a bit and give you some options. You can choose to shoot the Medusa and hope to cut its head off with just two shotgun shells or choose to avoid this monster and shoot 4 standard knock-downs instead.

This gives the shooter an option to “tame the beast” or simply avoid it.

Read the stage description below to see what we mean.
