Registration: Onsite at 9:00 a.m. on Match day on the 200 yd range.
Cost: $15.00 for per shooter.
Type and # of targets: We set up 36 steel buffalo-shaped knock-down targets. The targets are arranged in 3 separate herds of 12 buffalo. 33 of the 36 targets are approximately ½ the size of an adult buffalo. 3 of the 36 targets are smaller in order to simulate juvenile-sized buffalos. There will be one “juvenile” target in each herd.
Another unique aspect about this competition is our use of knock-down targets. There is something uniquely satisfying when the shooter hits the target and it falls over.
Target distances: The targets are placed 150 to 290 yards from the firing line. The exact target distances are unknown to better mimic what the shooting experience would have been on the open range – approximate distances only. Because 33 of the 36 targets are approximately ½ the size of an adult, these distances mimic shooting full-sized buffalo at about 300 to 600 yards.
Shooting Position: The shooter may assume any shooting position they wish when on the firing line (e.g., prone, sitting, etc.) and may use a shooting stick, stool, chair, etc.
Competition: 3 shooters will take their positions along the firing line – one will be positioned to shoot herd 1, the 2nd to shoot herd 2, and the 3rd to shoot herd 3. Each shooter has 5 mins from their first shot to get all 12 shots off.
Match participants will shoot 1 herd during each each round of shooting, then move to the next herd during rounds 2 and 3. At the end of the match each shooter will have shot each of the three herds once.
Scoring: Scoring is based on the number of targets knocked down, the number of targets hit (but not knocked down), and the sum of the time remaining on the shooter’s 5-minute clocks. The winner is the shooter who knocked down the most targets. If two or more shooters knock the same number of targets down, the shooter who had the most hits is declared the winner. If two or more shooters are still tied at this point, the shooter with the most time remaining on their 5-minute clocks is declared the winner.
Round Count: Three herds of 12 buffalo = 36 rounds down range during the match.
