Before we get started, here’s a short FRU-related Haiku poem for our readers:

As we’ve indicated, this may be the last year for Fall Roundup and the official September 12 registration deadline is approaching fast. It’s not too late if you act soon. Click here to download the FRU 2022 Registration Form.

RT is pulling out all the stops and busting out some of our older novelty targets for one final rodeo – an old-style, historical cowboy shoot. So, if you liked the fun interactive targets of the past, come out and join us, September 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Below is a list of the fun targets you will see:

  • Cowboy bird-throwers, and a shotgun Medusa;
  • Swinging rifle targets, as in the past;
  • Novelty Cowboy targets, with moving parts;
  • Beer can launchers;
  • Texas star; and,
  • Dueling tree.

Can you throw a dynamite stick into a barrel, or whistle a tone, or shoot sitting on the back of a buckboard?  Come Play the Game with RT at FRU22.

Illowa Irregulars have been granted the SASS 2023 Illinois State Championship

Look what arrived in my email a few minutes ago! It’s official: Illowa Irregulars has been granted the SASS 2023 Illinois State Championship again. Mark your calendars for August 18-20, 2023.

We’re already planning for the event, including 10 great stages of shooting fun, another Mississippi River Dinner Cruise aboard the Celebration Belle, an indoor, post-match awards ceremony in an air-conditioned community center, great buckles and awards, raffles and door prizes, and more! We’re also a exploring a couple other unique things that you won’t want to miss – stay tuned.

If you’re from Illinois, don’t miss this chance to compete in your state’s championship. If you’re from another state, this will be a fun, energetic match for you as well. If you’re from a long distance away, take a look at your calendar and see if you can make it – it’s beautiful time here in the upper Midwest.

Popcorn Kelly’s Shoot-Out at Camden Mills 2022 – A Unique Perspective

Howdy Cowboys, Cowgirls, and Friends,

I recently completed one of the most ambitious Cowboy Action Shooting videos I’ve ever put together and want to share it with you.  I titled it:  Popcorn Kelly’s Shoot-Out at Camden Mills 2022 – A Unique Perspective

Unlike most cowboy action shooting videos, mine or others, which show single or partial stages of several match participants, this video chronicles three shooters through Illowa Irregular’s entire August, 2022 monthly match.   The three shooters, JW James, Mountain Man Champ, and Foyster O’Rippy, agreed to participate in this cowboy competition – a  sort of match within a match – with the winner being named Popcorn Kelly’s Shoot-Out At Camden Mills 2022 Champion.  All shot on the same posse. 

My purpose in creating this video is to highlight the competitive nature of our sport, often seen other sports, but not often seen in Cowboy Action Shooting.  You’ll get a sense of the ebb and flow of the match as the lead changes hands a few times. 

I’ll warn you, this is a long one, coming in at 39 mins.  Think of this more as a television show than a short stage video – a sort of Wide World of Sports episode, crude as it may be.  I also encourage you to watch it on a television if at all possible. 

While I have your attention, we have Fall Round-Up coming up September 23-25, 2022.  Get your registrations in soon. 

Illowa Irregulars Cowboy Club submitted our application to host the SASS Illinois State Championship from August 18-20, 2023.  The 2022 state championship was attended by 150 shooters from 16 states, and received rave reviews.  We are planning to host another Saturday evening dinner cruise on the Mississippi River aboard the Celebration Belle, and are planning another unique event yet to be finalized.  Look for our article in the next SASS Chronicle.  Please consider putting the SASS Illinois State Championship on your shooting calendar.  You’ll be glad you did.  Stay tuned.

FRU 2022; Stage 4 – RT, You’re Going to Swing – Updated Version

How’s this for a twist – RT has changed his mind: He’s added a moving target to Stage 4 for your rifle. Have you ever shot moving and swinging targets using the same gun on a single stage? Here’s your chance! See Stage 4’s updated instructions below.

Swing: intransitive verb

  1. To move back and forth suspended or as if suspended from above.
  2. To move laterally or in a curve.
  3. To hit at something with a sweeping motion of the arm.

in this stage, RT gives you two of the three above definitions –

  1. the Cougar swings back and forth; and,
  2. the shooter moves laterally.

We’ll, let’s just forget about #3 – no hitting allowed!.

All kidding aside, the swinging Cougar is a fun stage, and you get plenty of chances to hit the 5 pistols targets on the dueling tree, so no worries there. Another way to think about this stage: All for fun; and fun for all!
